Lake N. Plastiras
The region of Plastira Lake is the destination of thousands of tourists. The beauty and the charm of the area are known to thousands of visitors. Brief historical and other useful data are presented in this page so that you can get to know the area on-line...
The artificial Lake of Nikolaos Plastiras lies west of Karditsa, in a distance of approximately 20 km. It is a characteristic sample of a "dendroid" form of lake due to the dentelated outline of its shores.

It was created at the plateau of Nevropoli, at an altitude of 800 m, when the waters of the Megdova river flooded the area following the construction of a dam in "Kakkavakia" area. The dam which lies near the Moucha settlement was concluded in 1959. Its height is 83 m. and its length 220 m. The idea about the creation of the Lake and the implementation of the project was conceived in 1925 by N. Plastiras and the lake was named after him.

The Lake covers an area of 25,000 stremmata. Its length is 14 km, its width 4 km and its capacity is 400 million cubic meters of water. There are more than 10 kinds of fish in the lake (trout, crayfish, eel, carp etc). Fishing is an important activity for hundreds of amateur fishermen.

Apart from its contribution to the tourist development of the Prefecture, the other benefits are tremendous as well. With the utilization of its waters, electrical energy of 40 MWH per week is produced. More than 100 thousand stremmata of the lowlands of the Prefecture are irrigated and the town of Karditsa, as well as tens of other villages, is supplied with water.

The region of Plastira Lake is a pole of attraction for thousands of visitors. It has a considerable infrastructure, such as: Environmental Education Centre, Educational Forest, Ecological Paths, Botanical Garden, Hydro-biological Station, Observatory, Alpine Shelters, and Outdoor Activity Centres. You can rent bikes, canoes, water bicycles for a ride in the lake etc.

There are important monuments and places of interest in the wider region (Sacred Monastery of Korona, Sacred Monastery of Pelekiti, Sacred Monastery of Petra, Gaki cave, Kaimakia cave etc).

The circumferential stretch of the Lake (approximately 60 km) is pleasant and comfortable all year round. During the stretch there are many hotels, pensions and rooms to let. There are also many taverns and restaurants with tasty appetizers and well-cooked food, trout, game, grilled meats, wine and local raki. The visitors can buy local products from the producers of the region, spoon sweets, frumenty, garden products, wine, raki etc.

The businesses-members of the Plastiras-net Network are located on the most nodal points of the stretch around the Lake.

The area around the Lake belongs to the Municipalities: Nevropoli, Plastira and Itamos. The following villages and settlements are located at an altitude higher than the plateau and with a view over the Lake: Kryoneri, Pezoula, Kalivia Pezoulas, Fylakti, Neraida, Kalivia Fylaktis, Neochori, Belokomytis, Plakoto, Karitsa, Karvasaras, Moucha, Kastania, Lampero and Ag. Athanasios Laberou.

Morfovouni, Mesenikolas, Moschato, Katafygi villages are located near the Lake at an altitude lower than the plateau. They occupy the South-Eastern side of the plateau with a panoramic view over the vast plain of Thessaly. The basic road axes to Plastira Lake pass by these villages.
